Top NFL Landing Spots for Running Backs & Wide Receivers

Running Back

Here’s a look at some NFL teams likely eyeing running backs early in the 2024 draft due to a weak running back group:

  • Teams lacking overall talent: Franchises that have struggled to run the ball consistently and lack a dynamic back might be in the market for a top prospect. This could include teams that currently rely on committees or veterans nearing the end of their careers.
  • Teams with injury concerns: If a team’s starting running back is coming off a major injury or has a concerning injury history, they might target a back in the draft for insurance or even a potential replacement.

Here are some specific teams that might be looking for running backs:

  • Teams that have been relying on running back committees might be looking for a clear-cut starter.
  • Teams with aging veterans at the position might be looking for their heir apparent.
  • Teams that have been disappointed with their current running backs’ production could be looking for an upgrade.

It’s important to note that this is just speculation, and team needs can change based on free agency and the draft itself. But by considering these factors, you can get a good idea of which teams might be most interested in the talented running back prospects in the 2024 draft class.

Several NFL teams are in dire need of a running back upgrade for the 2024 draft. Here’s a breakdown of some of the most pressing needs:

  • Top Needs:
  • Dallas Cowboys: Their leading rusher left for the Titans, and they need a true feature back or talent to competent their passing game.
  • Las Vegas Raiders: They need a starter, or at the very least depth to compete with Zamir White.
  • Significant Needs:
  • Arizona Cardinals: Their future at running back is uncertain, James Conner is a solid starter but he’s older and been injury prone.
  • Denver Broncos: They need more options in the backfield. Fantasy pundits point to Javonte Williams but he’s not shown workhorse ability.
  • New York Giants: They’re looking for a long-term solution at the position, though Devin Singletary is underrated.
  • Los Angeles Chargers: Gus Edwards is underrated however Jim Harbaugh (HC) and Greg Roman (OC) will want to run at least 50% of the time, and that means there will be touches for at least one more productive back. Expect them to take a guy in the 3rd or 4th round who will have immediate opportunity.
  • Los Angeles Rams: Kyren Williams was a pleasant surprise in 2023 but he’s not a bellcow and has been injury prone (missed multiple games both seasons of his NFL career). So look for them to bring in some competition.

Wide Receivers

The 2024 NFL Draft is stacked with talented wide receivers, but several teams have glaring holes. Here’s a look at some of the teams with the biggest need for a wide receiver:

  • Top Needs:
  • Jacksonville Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence needs a true WR1. Their current options cannot be a consistent deep threat.
  • New York Giants: Their receiving corps lacks a true playmaker.
  • Los Angeles Chargers: Mike Williams and Keenan Allen are gone, so they need to invest a selection at this position. That said they could wait until round 2 or 3.
  • Arizona Cardinals: It’s not as big a need as the Chargers but outside of Trey McBride they lack any proven receiving options.
  • Buffalo Bills: Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis have departed, thus adding another weapon for Josh Allen is a necessity regardless of what their GM and HC say.
  • Carolina Panthers: they lack a reliable high end option, and can use secondary receiving options as well.
  • Significant Needs:
  • Indianapolis Colts: They need a receiver who can win contested catches, and take the top of the defense (and complement Michael Pittman Jr.).
  • Chicago Bears: A top wide receiver prospect could be a game-changer for their young QB.
